Clay Shirky talks about how the institution is challenged and threatened by the growth of individuals collaborating in self-interest groups that can be ephemeral, but consist of really meaningful individual contributions that would not have been possible (let alone encouraged) by an institution. He goes on to demonstrate power laws that illustrate how the depth and breadth of collaboration enriches experience and knowledge.
